G. Caroline Joyce North Carolina State University NELA Fellow Cohort IV
WHO I AM...
What do our students of Eastern North Carolina need to overcome the obstacles of high poverty in low-performing schools that struggle to hire and retain quality teachers? It begins with "who" our students and teachers need as their instructional leader. Through a rigorous strategic program, North Carolina State University's Northeast Leadership Academy (NELA) has prepared me to be that person.
I began my journey fourteen years ago as a high school science teacher, where I consistently exceeded expected growth in biology. During my first year of NELA, I learned new research-based instructional practices that stretched me as a teacher to maximize learning in the classroom. As a summer intern in the community, I learned how important the community and networking are to the success of our students. During my principal residency at Tarboro High School, I have experienced the paradigm shift of looking at the structure and organization of school systems as an administrator, rather than as a teacher. In addition, my NELA Executive Coach, Dr. Mike Ward, former State Superintendent of North Carolina, has supported me throughout my experience with guidance, clarification, and support and encouragement, pushing me to grow as an instructional leader and talking me through difficult decisions and different perspectives. Presently, I am an instructional coach at North Edgecombe High School where I coach, model teach, build curriculum and make data-driven decisions based on common formative assessments to help grow our teachers and our students. In addition, I have personally created the systems and structure of an innovative daily schedule that allows for student choice and homogeneous groupings of remediation and enrichment to grow our students academically, emotionally and socially.
NELA has cultivated in me a growth mindset to seek out the inherent challenges of our educational system and find innovative solutions to overcome the obstacles inherent in Eastern North Carolina schools. Every school is unique, and every group of students and teachers have their own gifts and their own challenges. I am prepared for my next step of the NELA journey: to lead our teachers and students to become the leaders they can be.
